COURSE OVERVIEW
This course will meet the required the qualifications, experience and knowledge requirements for Safework NSW Pyrotechnician's licence, see

Other requirements for a Pyrotechnician's licence are;
- be over 18 years of age
- hold a current "Security Clearance"
A "Security Clearance", which is a precursor licence to the Pyrotechnician's Licence is a separate licence achieved through application to Safework NSW, please see

To gain the Security Clearance, you will need to:
- Be over 18 years of age
- Complete and pass a National criminal history record check
- Pay the appropriate some of money (Currently $162.00)
- Provide 100 points of ID and two passport size photographs.
This licence is of 5 year duration, unless cancelled earlier.
The Security Clearance is a pre-requisite for Pyrotechnician's Licence, you as a participant will not require a Security Clearance to undertake the course as you will always be under supervision, however to gain your Pyrotechnician's licence you will need the Security Clearance.
We recommend that you apply for your Security Clearance as soon as you commit to this course as it can take some weeks to be processed.
The course consists of up to five Nationally Recognised units of competency:
The core units:
- CUAPYR401 Manage health and safety requirements at fireworks displays
- CUAPYR402 Operate outdoor fireworks displays
- CUAPYR403 Plan outdoor fireworks displays
- CUAPYR404 Operate close proximity fireworks displays
- CUAPYR405 Plan close proximity fireworks displays
Fireworks Australia strongly believes that Fireworks Technicians need to be current in their First Aid skills and encourage people to gain and maintain skills in this area, although not a pre requisite for training.
This course is conducted at Fireworks Australia's premise in Bellmount Forest near Gunning in NSW.
The course requires a nominal six week period to complete as is listed below (including 5 days on site):
Upon enrolment, and confirmation of first aid qualifications, the participant is issued with the Pre course reading literature consisting of a 250 page Fire Works manual (Pyrotechnic operator and Crew Safety Training Handbook). These are to be read prior to attendance at Gunning, a minimum of two weeks is provided for this.
The intensive 5 day period which is held at Bellmount Forest.
The Pyrotechnic course starts on the Tuesday morning at 8.00am and runs through to Approximately 10:00pm on Saturday night, culminating in the first full fireworks display panned and operated by the participants.
Essentially this course combines classroom training in the essential skills sets and also a range of hands on training to develop skills, knowledge and experience. At the completion of the course the students will meet the requirements of a NSW Pyrotechnics licence.
Participants are responsible for their own accommodation, breakfast and evening meals during the intensive training sessions at Bellmount Forest. Gunning has various motel accommodation and Canberra is only 52km away with Goulbourn 62 km away.
On the last evening of the intensive week, the participants are to plan and deliver a significant size fireworks display to the public. This will be done under the close supervision of Fireworks Australia staff.
Participants will be then issued with their major assignment for which four weeks has been allocated. In their own time and working from their own home, participants will be required to develop their own operations manual for a fireworks display, this is a major requirement of Safework NSW for the Pyrotechnician's licence. This manual will serve as the foundation document for all of the participants future Pyrotechnics work.
The is manual is to be submitted in four weeks time from the conclusion of the intensive week. This take home exercise is not only a good assessment tool but a good opportunity for students to reflect on their learning and experiences. During this period the training staff are available for additional instruction, assistance and support.

To be eligible to enrol in this training program, participants must be over 18 years of age.
These units of competency are nationally recognised and can only be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that complies with the governing standards of quality control and quality training and assessment.
Assessment is based on competency i.e. ability to perform tasks to a required standard. Assessment is conducted through a combination of theory paper, and number practical demonstration and completion of a log book of activities.
The outcome of this training program will be a Statement of Attainment for the above units of competency.
All training and assessment is conducted in English, and we will use our enrolment form as a method of determining if you have the required English standard. We will attempt to support you with some assistance with English, such as providing verbal assessments in English, however should your needs for support or assistance exceed our skills, we will refer you to a suitable organisation to assist you further, this may be a TAFE local to you.
Should there be another way we can assist you with ensuring that you maximise your chances of completing the course though us changing something or accommodating your needs please call our Administration Staff.
Should a participant not be successful with their first attempt at completing the course, they will be allowed another opportunity to sit and complete the course at no charge, should the participant still not have completed the course satisfactorily, they will need to make a fresh application to sit the course complete with an additional course payment.
